Singapore from B.W. to C.

1985

My first photographic exhibition. What had initially started out as a commission of photojournalistic black and white photographs of Singapore for the French Magazine City, triggered in me the desire to explore again the relationship between painting and photography. I began working on the photographs with colours, at first in a realistic manner, then pushing this approach further to create increasingly graphic and expressionistic images. This resulted in a series of works ranging from pure black and white photos to images bursting with colours.

They were presented as a series of 47 images in an installation at a flatted factory, a typical Singaporean environment, making use of the furnitures in storage and the machinery of a carpentry workshop generously hosted by the antiques dealer Lucina Talib; the first use of an industrial space for the purpose of an art exhibition and probably one of the first shows of contemporary art photography in Singapore.

I AM MA.
As simple as that.
And I work on the space between things.
