My Life as a Lamp-post

2002

In 2001, the news came that a Singaporean version of the prestigious Parisian Mois de la Photographie was to be organised the following year. I then thought of using my series of lamp-post photographs, started in my school days, with the shot of a lamp-post lighted in bright daylight in Amsterdam. Over the next twenty five years, this paradoxical sight repeated itself many times, and the isolated shot grew into a series of over a hundred lamp-posts from around the world, expanding the original theme, exploring the contrast between natural and artificial light.

In 1990, the opportunity to publish some of these photographs in a magazine led me to write a fictitious essay, in which Lamp-post #37 told a story about 'his life as a lamp-post'. I used the title of the article for the show and the text to produce a catalogue published as a limited edition artist book.

As narrated by Lamp-post #37

I AM MA.
As simple as that.
And I work on the space between things.
