Visavisage remains to this day my last experimentation with the concept of multiple time-space elements combining to form one image. The working method of Visavisage was initiated on the occasion of a trip to Shanghai where the overwhelming sense of the crowd in the streets led me to create portraits the way I had created facades in Calcutta.
Features of different faces were memorised through the day and recombined in the evening into a simple pen and ink drawing, giving birth to a visage that reflected the day's encounters. I kept practising this exercise when back in Singapore, where the work finally resulted in an exhibition presented in the gallery Utopia.
