Les Anges Passent

1997

This exhibition was produced at the request of a group of friends who had opened a trendy café in Keong Saik Road. The street, long famous as the red light district of Chinatown, was in the process of being gentrified and certainly made an interesting subject. However, most of the action in Keong Saik takes place behind closed doors and my first attempt at photographing the discreet comings and goings of the girls in the street exuded some impression of voyeurism that I didn't like.

I had recently purchased a new computer and was experimenting with graphic programs for the first time. Since they needed something 'more' that wasn't there at first, these images looked like a perfect ground to do so. I manipulated with Photoshop, and transferred the laser prints onto thick paper, giving a feeling of lithograph to the final result. The show was presented in the café Operetta for the regular customers but the girls too came, and they liked it.

I AM MA.
As simple as that.
And I work on the space between things.
