The Tree of Life is an attempt at bringing the over ground landscape to the underground station. The initial idea was based on my discovery of tropical greeneries while driving along South Buona Vista upon arriving in Singapore in 1981. As the name Buona Vista connotes to the idea of outdoor scenery, I decided to go back to the place that had given me those earliest impressions within the Singapore context. While walking in the park, this eucalyptus tree caught my attention. Although the species is not indigenous, its shape, colour and texture of the bark fitted the shape of the lift shaft as well as the colour scheme of the station. In order to better fit the glass panel format I decided to use once more the tiling technique that had been a hallmark of my work in the 1990’s. |
